TRADE AND MARKETING Fruit Logistica fully homing in on product concepts No more need to bend over Another product that has been nominated for the Innovation Award is the Polymer Logistics roll containers, which is why this company has focused the spotlights on their new plastic roll containers with a movable base. The movable base offers an important ergonomic advantage for both the loaders and the unloaders. When filling the containers, the employees of the packaging firm no longer have to bend over so much. The bottom of the empty container is at hip-height and gradually lowers into the container as it is filled. This means that the filler height remains constant. Once in the shop, the bottom gradually comes up again as the customers or the shop staff take the bags out of the container. The empty container can be completely folded thereby reducing the space needed for the return trip. An additional advantage is the lower noise production as the crates are rolled in and out. This is because the crates are provided with soft plastic wheels, which hardly make any noise. It is often the case that supermarkets have their products delivered in the middle of the night. Metal roll crates make lot of noise. As shops are often situated in residential areas, noise is increasingly becoming an important consideration, is Polymer Logistics’ experience. Tag displays all product data This year, the number of stands in the technology hall of Fruit Logistica has increased enormously. Suppliers of packaging machinery, weighers, storage and logistics specialists can all be found in the technology hall. One of the exhibitors is Tolsma Techniek in Emmeloord. Maarten van Delden from this company is giving instructions from behind the steering wheel of a forklift truck about the new MES control Tracking and Tracing system. This system provides information about the entire logistics system of a store with products stored in boxes. ‘What the system does is automatically register the contents and the position of the boxes’, explains Van Delden. It is no longer necessary to identify the box with paper labels or with crayon markings. Instead, an electronic identification label is attached. This tag, as it is called, is unique according to Van Delden. ‘The system recognises the box on the basis of electromagnetic waves. A reading and writing module with a terminal on the forklift truck makes all the information on the tag visible for the driver. By linking the MES control to a storage system in the office, all necessary information is immediately retrieved. This also makes it possible to plan orders simply and quickly. Furthermore, the system ensures greater efficiency and fewer mistakes in the registration’, emphasises Van Delden.● Jaap Delleman Potato World 2010 • number 2 15 Pagina 14
