This is a subject that returns to the Potato magazine columns at regular intervals. The Dutch Agricultural Marketing Board and the Rabobank have even written the report on that subject. This was also the key question at the presentation of the report. Many players in the potato chain need to make choices throughout the whole year. This occurs in many areas such as cultivation, investments and entering into contracts. Making choices can occur in various ways. For instance, arguments, judiciousness, desired results, or obligations can be examples of having to make choices. Because one doesn’t know beforehend whether a choice was the right one, the decision is often accompanied by a sense of insecurity. This also applies to decisions such as entering into contracts with the processing industry. At current prices, it is very difficult to continue to supply potatoes at a profit. What choice do you then have as a player in the chain to continue to produce in a sustainable way? Aviko director for raw materials, Dick Zelhorst, sees opportunities mainly in vertical integration. In making clear arrangements to get the potatoes on the market as efficiently as possible. In his view, this is necessary to continue to market high-quality products. Zelhorst is even examining the possibility of having growers who want to actively collaborate also share in the profits. That choices are necessary to keep a grip on the current situation in the potato sector is, at any rate, no longer necessary. How to act, is something that will need to be determined by each individual entrepreneur on the basis of his or her capabilities and instincts. Jaap Delleman Potato World 2010 • number 2 3 Pagina 2
