TRADE AND MARKETING The most promising varieties that meet the most important market trends At the beginning of November, the annual variety show of Dutch and also foreign potato merchants took place in and around Emmeloord. As usual, Potato World magazine toured along all the presentations with a key question. ‘What is the most important trend in your breeding work and which is the most promising variety? That was the question that was put to the representatives of the potato merchants. This was often followed by a moment of silence. ‘Yes, what direction are we in fact taking with our breeding work, which market trends are we following, where are we heading, what is the common denominator. Is there only one direction or are there more?’ you hear some musing. Although the various companies have views that may differ widely, there are also similarities. INFINITY Erik Appeldoorn, IPM, Deinum: ‘We go for niche markets’ ‘We deviate from the table potatoes in our breeding programme and, besides nematode resistance, we focus on niche markets for the processing industry. Many companies in the potato sector go for varieties with which they can stand out in specific markets. In the crisps market, we see companies developing traditional products. They want to radiate that home feeling in their products. We’ve even developed a special packaging for this market. The Infinity variety is a strong newcomer in this niche segment. There was a lot of interest from the Netherlands, Germany, France and Great Britain during the variety presentation days. With 24 percent dry matter, you can make tasty crisps with this red-skinned variety, which is a cross between the Lady Rosetta and our own Rooster. The variety also has strong resistance to bacteria and it yields well. We’re already growing seed of this variety in Scotland and we’ve started developing strains in the Netherlands this year.’ Potato World 2014 • number 2 13 Pagina 12
