With these businesses, the company has acquired a wide range of products and knowledge about developing biological products. ‘This combination is important. We need people who started to develop biologicals and are used to look in a different way at these products than what we are used to’, Jolanda Wijsmuller emphasises. Wijsmuller works as product manager, Biologicals, at Bayer Cropscience in the Netherlands. ‘There are three important reasons why we as Bayer Cropscience invest in these products. The first is residue management. Number two is that it is becoming increasingly difficult and, subsequently, more expensive to select a chemical product that meets all the requirements in respect of registration, and the third reason is resistance management. If you want to get somewhere with biological products, you need a lot of money. It’s a good thing that the big chemical businesses are now joining and investing in the development of these products. In addition, we have extensive expertise in registering products. Smaller businesses that develop biological products find that process rather complicated. We also have a worldwide network,. which provides access to a lot of information and markets. But there are also a few drawbacks to this new market. We have acquired a good name with the chemical products, which the customers can trust. This means that our biological products must be at least as good as the chemical ones, which is why we have opted to draw up a registration dossier, for which we take all the time it needs. Products under pressure ‘The current product range is continuously under pressure’, Wijsmuller continues. The sector has to deal with many new EU laws and regulations. It’s already clear that we’re going to lose products during the reregistration. We’re not sure yet which products these will be. There are currently already more restrictions on products that companies reregister. Moreover, we need to develop an increasingly larger number of active substances in order to keep one that meets all the registration requirements. If a product meets 99 of the 100 requirements, it drops out. All this is reason enough to step up the development of biological products. ‘In general, biologicals are slightly easier to get through the approval process.
