PW-ACTUA Successful storage showcase at P.J. Lee & Sons This year a team of partner organisations delivered a new state of the art 11,000+ ton controlled environment, potatostorage facility, at P.J. Lee & Sons Packhouse near Sutton Gault in England. The project was a 9 room new age ecological storage building with forced air suction ventilation, purpose designed boxes and complete with individual cell environmental and climate control systems with unrivaled on line remote access and monitoring facilities. During a open day more than 300 visitors visited the facility where ventilationspecialist Omnivent and other contributors provided guided tours through the facility and crop ventilation system operational features. This activity created great industry interest with many talking points raised and discussions instigated by the visitors, the majority of which had genuine industry interest and storage needs. Overall visitor reaction was that of being very much impressed by the building construction and associated technology systems as installed and implemented in the storage facility. The guided tours provided them with an in-depth insight into of how the various systems and technologies work and how and why the Lee potato storage facility had been set up; in fact there was also further interest from the full spectrum of arable farmers growing other storable crops as well. The internal exhibition area was held in the grading area inside the building but extended to the outside courtyard area in front of the facility where Grimme UK, TNS Group and Standen Engineering had equipment on show. ● new Europatat Secretary Raquel Izquierdo de Santiago will be the new Secretary General of the European lobbyist organisation Europatat. She succeeds Frederic Rosseneu, who left for the Belgian multinational Univeg on 1 October. The Spanish Izquierdo de Santiago has worked in Brussels for the past fifteen years, nine years of which as Director, Food Policy, Health and Nutrition at Freshfel. This is the European trade organisation for fruit and vegetables. In addition, she was also Deputy General of the World Apple and Pear Association (WAPA). The Secretary General herself is very much a fan of potatoes. Spanish tortilla de patatas is her favourite dish, she says. In order to have more consumers eat potatoes, Izquierdo de Santiago wants to devote a great deal of attention to the promotion of the potato, hereby emphasising the special nutritional value of this healthy food. The subject will definitely be on the agenda of the next Europatat conference, she promised solemnly. ● SV-Agri and Mooij Agro are starting a joint venture in India Hemant Gaut, CEO of SV-Agri in India and Maarten Mooij, Managing Director of Mooij Agro in the Netherlands have signed an agreement to set up a joint venture. The official act took place during the annual SV-Agri convention in Pune, India on 10 and 11 September. Thanks to the joint venture, it is possible for SV-Agri and Mooij Agro to also develop and implement the best storage technology for the Indian market. SV-Agri – which has approx. forty permanent staff – has its place of business in Pune Maharashtra. The company is well-known here for its activities in the cultivation and trade of potatoes for the processing industry. Mooij Agro is based in Horst in the Netherlands and is part of the Hotraco Group. The Indian joint venture offers Mooij Agro the opportunity to support SV-Agri in every possible way in regard to the design, installation, implementation, training, after sales and service of agricultural products at that location.
