TRADE AND MARKET I NG Potato Europe has become a world-class business gathering S ince its creation, Potato Europe’s reputation has been built on the dynamic demonstrations of potato harvesting. This year’s French edition will also stand out with its world-leading dynamic optical sorting demonstrations. A total of no fewer than 23 dynamic demonstrations, processing more than a thousand tons of potatoes, will show off the manufacturers’ latest innovations in a live environment. Arvalis is also making plans to include 4 technical areas that will present R&D advances: genetic resources and varietal innovations, agronomy, diagnostics and in-built protection, and storage and conservation. Conferences will also be organised (on sensors in agriculture and export markets). Covering an area of 44 hectares, the exhibition includes many experts and over 280 exhibitors who will show off their innovations, share their results and discuss their experiences with visitors. Over the last 11 years, Potato Europe’s reputation has gone from strength to strength. Crowds have grown irrespective of the hosting country (Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands), and visitors have poured in from all five continents. Even in 2012, nearly 40 percent of the visitors welcomed in France came from overseas - representing more than 50 countries! Extensive mechanisation demonstration Centrally-located on the event terrain will be an irrigated plot of 23 hectares with potatoes of the French Magnum French-fry variety. On this terrain, fifteen potato harvesters of the AVR, Dewulf, Grimme, Pouchain, Ploeger and Ropa brands will lift these French-fry potatoes. The potatoes will leave the grounds via five loading and unloading lines of the AVR, Dewulf-Miedema, Downs-AVS, Eurodirect-Dewaele Briche and Grimme brands. To help visitors gain more indepth understanding of the technique of these lifting machines, the organisation has set up three lifting groups. The first group includes three and four-row selfprOpelled machines. A second group includes drawn and self-prOpelled tworow machines and the third group is formed by drawn one-row and two-row lifters. The time-table for these lifting operations will be published on the website of the event at the beginning of September. Electronic grading in practice Practical demonstrations have been the cornerstone of Potato Europe. This year, the organisation of the international event even goes a step further. Besides lifting and loading and unloading, there will be a practical demonstration in France with three electronic grading machines. Electronically grading washed potatoes is, in fact, a fast-developing trend in the market. Like four years ago, when the event also took place in France, the organisation arranged for a professional demonstration with electronic grading machines. This year, DewulfMiedema, Tomra, and Visar Sorting will cross swords with each other to show the visitors the added value of this technology. Practical demonstrations have been the cornerstone of Potato Europe. Presentation of practical studies To offer visitors in-depth information, Arvalis has chosen four important themes on the basis of which the results of practical studies will be presented to the expected 10,000 visitors. The themes are: agronomy, genetic resources and varietal innovations, protecting cultivations, and storage and conservation. The fertilisation workshop will promote three innovations. Firstly, using a currently very fashionable technology, there will be a report on the results of initial work on the use of drones to adjust nitrogen levels. Arvalis experts will also show performance data for modified urea accumulated from several years of testing. Lastly, they will provide an in-depth update on fertiliser positioning during planting. The workshop on cover crops will introduce the new ‘Plant cover selection’ decisionmaking assistant. This service takes into account the agronomic situation (crop systems, sowing period, etc.), the anticipated crop management (sowing, destruction, etc.) and the farmer’s expectations (economic primary objective, catch crops, slug protection, etc.). This free-access decision-making tool will be put online in May 2016 at www. arvalis-infos.fr. The irrigation workshop will demonstrate how it is possible to save up to 20 percent of energy using the irrigation installation diagnosis tool.
