This means that the product is stored in a mechanical cooling facility during the hottest period of the year. Not in buildings that are well ventilated as we know them in Western Europe, but in sky-high warehouses where the workers usually haul the 50 kg bags of potatoes manually to the fifth floor. Because of the often too high CO2 concentration and the particularly low temperature of barely 2 degrees Celsius, it’s not advisable to stay in such buildings for any length of time; this applies to potatoes as well as human beings. This means that farmers in India could use a bit of knowledge about how to store potatoes. There’s currently a lot going on in the potato sector in Western Europe. A poorer harvest and quality problems are causing extra tension in the market this year. What doesn’t make any difference in all the potato growing areas in the world is that you need knowledge everywhere if you want to bring your growing results to a higher level. Transparent taring, in which potato processor Kroef invested last year, is an important technique which allows for a fair price for growers and buyers alike. Whether new breeding techniques will provide new varieties without quality problems in the future, we will see in the coming years. HZPC CEO Gerard Backx calls on the Dutch government to take decisions on this so that breeders will be able to develop a sustainable strategy with modern techniques to take the potato to an even more sustainable place in the world.
