RE SEARCH Record potato product exports in 2016 The world’s three main potato product suppliers increased sales in 2016, but they were joined by some new players who could become more significant in the future. In this article, Cedric Porter of World Potato Markets looks at frozen fry sales, the most traded potato product. EU fry export prices to markets outside the EU were at US$780/tonne in 2016, which was 12.0% higher than in the year before. T he European Union remains the world’s largest exporter of fries shipping 1.370 million tonnes in the year to the end of November 2016. That figure was 8.0% higher than in 2015 and 260% up on the 2006 total. Star performers for the EU included main market SAudi Arabia, up 11.5% to 206,500 tonnes and fourth placed market Chile, up 24.0% to 85,000 tonnes. Belgium and the Netherlands continue to dominate EU supply with total Belgian exports (EU and external markets) at 2 million tonnes in the year to the end of October and a third of those sales outside the EU. Total Dutch exports were 1.75 million tonnes in 2016. EU fry export prices to markets outside the EU were at US$780/tonne in 2016, which was 12.0% higher than in the year before.
