That’s also what a customer like McDonald’s is pointing out. This is why the fast food chain was talking seriously about breeding issues and consumer wishes at the French agricultural trade fair SIA in Paris. The French growers’ organisation, CNIPT, presented the same message. The new Potato Handbook, written by Professor Anton Haverkort, also deals with innovative solutions in potato cultivation. It is now possible to order this comprehensive reference book about the potato, which is an ideal guide for optimising the cultivation and marketing of this major world crop. High quality and accessible knowledge is and will always be necessary in order to be able to respond to the many challenges in the international potato sector. Last year, the freely-cultivated consumption potato harvest fetched very low prices in Europe. The sometimes volatile prices between the seasons are also reflected in the story about Dutch breeding work in Italy. The area visited, which was to the south of Rome, is characterised by mostly harsh growing conditions with varying climate zones. As a result, in addition to being an interesting sales area for the 60,000 tons or more of seed potatoes required in Italy annually, it is also an interesting testing area for new varieties. By creating trial fields in all parts of the world, breeders receive information from various sources in order to market the varieties and ultimately the seed potatoes in suitable climate zones. In order to respond to these climate zones, I should also mention the increasing importance of modern breeding methods such as marker-assisted breeding. After all, a major disease such as Phytophthora changes every year. Agrico Research director Sjefke Allefs is confident that, by stacking resistance genes, he will be able to control this expensive potato blight in the long run.
