TRADE AND MARKET I NG Famous Chuño provides Peruvian growers with better income WPC WANTS TO SUPPORT POORER FARMERS The World Potato Congress (WPC) is a worldwide congress that takes place every three years in a potato-growing country. This year Peru, the land of origin of the potato, was the host. The local organisers of the CIP had chosen biodiversity, food safety and business as their themes. The focus in this edition was on opportunities for poorer growers. Leoncio Pichikua Quito spoke as the only grower and WPC presented a toolbox to help poorer growers. At the end of May, the WPC set itself up in an old Inca palace in Cusco, high in the Peruvian mountains. Due to collaboration with the scientific congress of Asociación Latinoamericana de la Papa (ALAP), the introductions had a high technical content. In addition, many of the introductions were about helping the poorer farmers in the world. It is positive that the people of Coopagros have now established their power supply and have even found two new customers. Toolbox WPC Chairman, Romain Cools presented the Value Chain toolbox. In six steps, entrepreneurs in developing countries can now learn how to set up a value chain and roll it out sustainably and successfully. Cools said that the first step consists of seeking cooperation between local companies and organising financing. The second step is to provide healthy planting stock. Unfortunately, the CIP had not chosen to invite Western leaders to inspire the many Peruvian and other Latin American participants. This was a missed opportunity because many of the introductions and also the field day at the research institute were about the lack of good planting stock. Step three is to get the business management in order and to develop cultivation techniques. This automatically leads to step four, the sustainable production and storage of potatoes. The next step is to create added value in, for example, packaging and processing. The last and very important step is marketing. This was also highlighted in the introduction of Dr Maxime Torero, Director of the World Bank. He foresees an ever-increasing globalisation, which means that French fries from Western Europe will conquer the whole of Latin America. He argues that local growers should distinguish themselves with locally-produced potatoes, with which they can build up a sustainable livelihood and thus make a stand against cheap imports from Western Europe. In 2021, the WPC will take place in Dublin, Ireland from 24 to 27 May.
