CULTIVATION AND TECHNOLOGY Surfing the British Potato The British innovate in a British way, also where potatoes are concerned. Plenty of examples to confirm this view could again be seen at the British Potato Show in Harrogate at the end of last year. Mojo’s own RTK system A completely stand-alone RTK GPS system without any reliance on radio/TV masts and their corresponding operators. This is what Mojo RTK had on offer in its Soilessentials stand at the British Potato Show. What you buy here is your own RTK receiver-antenna unit and control box with a read-out screen for your tractor for less than € 9,000. What you get for that price is an operating system with a 5-centimetre driving accuracy and a 99 percent reliable positioning system. An extra, compensation-measuring device is obtainable for use on hilly terrain. The base station is a waterproof unit with an antenna you place on a tripod in your yard or on your land. Depending on the version, it has a reach of 12 to 25 kilometres. This Mojo RTK uses 24 satellites and therefore almost always has reception, according to the supplier. In addition, the unit that is positioned in the tractor is easy to mount. It is the same size as a car radio; it also contains a tuner with AM/ FM radio reception and can also be mounted in the same place as the standard radio. Moreover, the system can be easily linked to the steering mechanisms of the tractor or other equipment, affirms the manufacturer. Although the manufacturer is introducing this RTK system to the British market for the first time, it is not new in world. In countries such as Australia and Denmark, but also Portugal, Spain and France, the system is being used by about a hundred farmers.
