cultivation and technology Browsing for innovations at PotatoEurope Spacious, well-organised, informative and a wide range of international entries. That’s how PotatoEurope 2010 can be characterised. There was plenty to see as far as the potato is concerned, with a good number of innovations and additional clarification. There were field demonstrations that focused on planting, harvesting and storing with live commentary from DLG mechanisation specialist Dr. rolf Peters. In between, he also talked about the potato situation in these fields and elsewhere in Germany. Peter demonstrated in Bockerode that the potatoes lifted from the ridges come in a variety of conditions. Several deformed tubers roll over the conveyor belts, masses of second growth baby potatoes are left behind in the field and then there are tubers that, when you cut them, prove to be rock-hard and glassy. It seems that even this technical genius has no solution for these problems. ‘It varies by variety, region, and plot.’ He knows more about the technological side of things. We watched, listened with him and browsed the fairground in search of various other potato innovations. Potato World 2010 • number 4 13 Pagina 12
