The Spunta variety is still a favourite here because this variety does well in the second crop cycle. Other varieties often show the “cracking” disease. According to the experts, this is due to the many virus-diseased plants in the plot. They are a source of infection especially for the many second-growth plants. We would recommend a complete 50 hectare pivot, solely for the cultivation of seed potatoes. This plot must then be treated with systemically-acting insecticides and pyrethroids to prevent virus infection. Of the total Rum Farm acreage, 30 percent is already prepared for the cultivation of seed potatoes. The majority is for own usage, the remainder is marketed through local dealers. For the future, Rum Farm is looking for varieties suitable for the crisps industry. This is a particularly flourishing business. There are signs that there is going to be a new crisps company built in Jordan, Thaler tells us with great enthusiasm. The French varieties Saffon and Alaska are mainly used by Rum Farm for the second crop.
