In view of the export of French fries all over the world, such a year also offers opportunities for developing new markets. This may even have a lasting effect in the long term. Even China expert Fulco Wijdooge sees that this enormous country has difficulty meeting its demands for French fries. Together with the seed potato companies’ reluctance to introduce new varieties in China, a year like this one provides them with opportunities to get a firmer grip on this market. I also see that many companies, such as the German crop farmer Heinz Stammen, are continuing to invest in the cultivation of potatoes. In a neat and tidy yard, I saw perfectly-maintained machinery and potatoes being stored in modern storehouses. And in a year when the price barely covers the costs, Stammen sees opportunities to sell his quality potatoes at a better price later in the storage season. And even if the price remains low, he makes certain that he at least realises this price. You can’t really afFord reductions as a result of quality problems this year. You need to have a sharp eye and a great deal of craftsmanship all through the year. Another thing is, that in a year when people are talking about surpluses, you often see a lot of spillage.
