TRADE AND MARKETING 18 promising French fries varieties for the entire world Variety without a name develops at an early stage Miss Malline is without any doubt a yield topper BH-00-57. This is the future French fries topper of Schaap-Holland in Biddinghuizen. ‘No, it hasn’t got a name yet, but we are really looking hard for one. We have already submitted four names, but they have all been rejected. Have you got an idea, breeder Theo Meulendijks asks hopefully. Early Long might be an option, given the breeder’s description, for it is an early French fries variety that develops quickly. This combines with very good frying marks. The reason is that this variety reaches its optimal underwater weight very quickly. Its early mark is 8, which means that the BH-00-57 ripens just a little earlier than the Felsina. The colour of the flesh is between yellow and white, which makes the variety suitable for a wide market. Because it has a long oval shape and big tubers, without any undersized ones, it is a pure French fries variety. French fries manufacturer McCain is already using it. An additional reason for the processor is that the BH-00-57 is very suitable for cultivation on sandy soils, because it has a good resistance to wart disease and nematode-A. With an average of 54 tons per hectare in the trial fields, it yields excellently for an early variety. Wilhelm Meyer, breeder at Interseed in Dronten, immediately knows the name of the most successful new French fries variety: the Miss Malline. ‘There is no doubt about it’, he laughs. He picks up his little book of figures and his finger goes straight to the yield column, which says 100 and that equates here to 76.8 tons per hectare. This is the average of our mid-early French fries varieties in the trial fields. ‘The Miss Malline marks 135. Well, that makes it 104 tons! This will be lower in the field, but, somewhere between 90 and 100 tons must be possible’, says Meyer. Moreover, this promising potato has a good range of nematode resistances in place. ABC and F have been accepted, D resistance is still being tested at the Dutch General Inspection Service for Agricultural Seed and Seed Potatoes (NAK). And to crown it all, this Miss also has a high resistance to virus Y and Phytophthora infestans is also not too big a problem for this variety. In Germany, the variety has been given a 2 , and this corresponds with not very susceptible. It is a somewhat rectangular, yellow-fleshed potato like the Agria. The variety is clearly different from the Agria, because it is an Atlantic crossing, which means that it is not affected by hollow growth or storage problems, Meyer casually remarks. Divaa is easy to clean and can be stored for You either are a Diva or you have a Diva, but then with a double A. The Dutch branch of the Scottish company Caithness has both – in the form of a promising French fries potato. ‘This Divaa is a crossing with Innovator’, breeder Jan Eric Geersing tells us. The variety has a smooth skin and that is an important characteristic for a French fries potato, especially in Britain. It means that the tuber can easily be cleaned, which is important for the consumer when the potatoes are sold as table potatoes in the supermarket. Yet, this white-fleshed large potato is mainly intended for the fast-food market. LambWeston and McCain have already tested the variety for all sorts of different uses.
