Because he analyses and experiences all the trends himself, you get the feeling that you, too, are eating reindeer moss in that worldfamous restaurant, Noma. Unfortunately, he didn’t know how healthy the potato is. And if he does not know this, there is clearly still a lot of creative work to do as far as famous restaurants are concerned. In these times of fast media such as websites, Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, the promotion of potatoes can continue 24/7. Trade information can be published equally well to the players in the potato sector via the digital highway. A Dutch study has shown that a proper trade journal is, fortunately, still an important source of information. Results from the ‘KWOOT media study agribusinesses’ have shown that 70 percent of the Dutch agricultural entrepreneurs cannot do without a trade journal. What has increased, however, is the need also to find information on the internet. In addition to banking, email and the digital registration of a variety of things, the use of the internet by agricultural entrepreneurs focuses mainly on news, product information, hobbies and social media, according to KWOOT. The PotatoWorld team has also started to use the social media. Our recently renewed website www.potatoworld.nl gives visitors the opportunity to go to the Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter pages. Visitors are also able to read the magazine on-line. I see interesting possibilities for Twitter in the short term. You can send short messages of up to 140 characters via the computer and on your smart phone via Twitter. There is also the possibility of attaching a photo or an internet link. With the smart use of language, you can spread information very fast. Growers and traders can thus share their experiences about certain products, or ask the opinions of others. When this is used on a large scale, you can quickly attain a practical network of the current status regarding cultivation, storage and the potato trade. PotatoWorld magazine would like to be part of that. Jaap Delleman, @potatoworldeu Potato World 2012 • number 3 3 Pagina 2
