TRADE AND MARKETING Food trend watcher inspires Europatat At the end of May, the annual meeting of the European potato trade, Europatat, took place in the Kurhaus Hotel in the Dutch coastal village of Scheveningen. The organisation had invited the food trend watcher Hans Steenbergen as their guest speaker who, being the inspiring speaker that he is, knows exactly how to market a food product. With all these examples, Steenbergen wants to show his Audience that the potato can be fitted into every trend and concept, the only thing is that you need to be there. B efore introducing the main guest speaker, the day’s chairman, NAO director René van Diepen, started by sketching all the healthy aspects of the potato. For the umpteenth time, no doubt, but not entirely unnecessary as it turned out. The main subject in Scheveningen was ‘Good PR’. For the potato, the nutritional elements of this food are its most important PR. Vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fibres, what else does it contain? The guest speaker who sets the ball rolling at the congress is the eminent Hans Steenbergen, editor of Food Inspiration magazine, the best food trend watcher of 2010, and top source of inspiration for the food concepts at Shoot My Food in Bennekom. And what is the guru of the world of food’s first sentence: ‘I didn’t know that the potato was so healthy.’ That is both a pity and at the same time the main problem where the potato’s PR is concerned.
