The Skylark project has shown them that potato cultivation flourishes best if a cropping plan includes cereals. This proves the time-honoured farmer wisdom for using ample crop rotation. Trials have even shown that yields are higher when more cereals are grown. As cereal prices are picking up, this offers fresh perspectives for the future, which also benefits the farmer in the longer term. If growers would wholeheartedly embrace GPS, yields may increase even more. Calculations by the Accon avm consultancy and accountancy firm show that this could significantly boost the farmer’s income. People in international potato breeding are also looking for sustainable solutions. Varieties with resistance to Phytophthora are high on the wish lists of the new potato cultivation areas. According to Professor Jacobsen, cisgeneses is the solution here. Whether or not this technological solution will be widely used will depend first and foremost on the acceptance of the public of this biotechnological method. All these developments together perfectly fit the ‘Next Level’ theme, which the PotatoEurope organisation has chosen this year.
