s CULTIVATION AND TECHNOLOGY Variety presentation 2012: in search of innovations Growing interest for red ‘It’s been fifteen years since we effectively started to look for new varieties. In breeding it usually takes about eleven or twelve years before the first suitable varieties come to the fore. Our innovations have started to come up right now, Michel de Nijs of the De Nijs potato trading company in Warmerhuizen explains. ‘One variety has gone through its first year and we hope to be able to register the following two new varieties next year. This marketing of our own varieties is quite a change in our company. You could also call that innovation. The art of innovation is that you need to look far into the future. That’s not so easy. For example, we noticed fifteen years ago that the demand for redstics and the market skinned varieties was slowly increasing. The result today is the Red Carolline, a variety which the market is now really ready for. You see, apart from the fact that we were noticing an increasing interest in red-skinned potatoes, we also noticed an increase in the demand for older varieties. Due to climate change, we also saw an increase in the need for strong drought and heat resistant varieties. The Red Carolline has all those characteristics. It’s an early red, suitable for cultivation in the Netherlands, but equally suitable for cultivation in hot countries. The variety scores 112 after 90 growing days, which places it between the Première and the Frieslander where earliness is concerned.’ Potato World 2013 • number 3 17 Pagina 16
