Gazing into it, a good glass of wine, contemplating the past, the present and the future. Events come and go, what is, is gone before you know it. The same applies to the potato branch. When walking around the annual variety show held by the seed potato merchants, it’s all about the past, the present and the future. In order to follow the trends now and later, breeders are able to use the best potato varieties from times long gone. This is not always simple, though, because those who want to be trendsetters, will soon need a crystal ball to look fifteen years ahead. If you look at the results, our top breeders have yet again succeeded in developing new varieties that are ready for the future. But when such a top variety has been found, it’s up to the skills of the growers and the merchants to give that variety its proper market value. We have a series of splendid initiatives on the agenda again this year such as the Potato Demonstration Day in the Netherlands, PotatoEurope in Germany and Interpom in Belgium. How this year will turn out is not yet known. Last year, the growers of first-early potatoes in Southern Spain did really well with their table potatoes. A good quality product and an increasing demand from NorthEuropean countries, gave these growers more financial flexibility. Following the impressive seed potato export to that country, expectations are again high this year. The Netherlands has done rather well with collaboration within the chain in the past. Big cooperatives have pushed up the export of seed potatoes. The NAK, where growers and traders jointly determine the extent of the inspections, is working on a distinctive, internationally-recognised quality mark, under the auspices of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. This is accelerating the innovation process of the Dutch potato sector, which now has a firm lead on its competitors abroad. The NAK has again taken a new step by putting a new DNA laboratory into operation. It’s a constant coming and going! Also in 2014. Jaap Delleman Potato World 2014 • number 1 3 Pagina 2
