TRADE AND MARKETING The most promising varieties that meet the most important market trends SAVIOLA Sjefke Allefs, Agrico Research, Bant: ‘Focus on Spunta’ short, an important market where improved varieties with bigger yields can contribute to the growing demand for food. This market is looking for traditional bulk varieties. These are varieties with relatively few quality characteristics. AM resistance has not yet become important here. These are mainly varieties that produce big potatoes, despite abiotic stress such as water shortage, BH 04 119 ‘In each of the fifteen segments for which we develop varieties, we make a top 10 of the most important ones. If you look at the overseas seed potato export market in the Mediterranean area, you see an enormous imbalance. With over 5,100 hectares of seed potatoes, Spunta is the largest, followed at a distance by the Fabula variety with 880 hectares. As far as I can see, we’ve met the need for the North-West European segments such as organic, red-skinned, salad, baking and French-fry potatoes very well in recent years. We’re now rediscovering how interesting the export market is. We’ve come back to the Dutch core business: the Mediterranean overseas areas. It is an interesting area. The population growth in Northern Africa is many times higher than in Europe. The demographic details point to a fast growing population. It’s expected that North Africa will have exceeded the total European population by 2030. In ‘At this show, we’re focusing on early French-fry varieties. We have two promising names in the spotlights: Amora and Ibiza. They fit into an important extra market for our company, but this only applies for a period of three months a year. Your question is aimed more at our most important activity and that is the table, export and French-fry markets combined. We prefer to have a variety from a wide graddrought and less- advanced farm technology. We have a few varieties that are ideal for these circumstances of which the Saviola is a very young variety which we expect to do very well. It is a variety that needs little knowledge and input and is capable of withstanding the abiotic stress very well. This year, we’re already growing 23 hectares of this seed.’ Hans Geling, Schaap Holland, Biddinghuizen: ‘Preferably a variety from a wide grading category’ ing category for that. When talking about table potatoes for export, you need a size of at least 60 millimetres upwards. So we prefer a potato that can also be used for the grill market. And I definitely want that variety to be suitable for chips too. It may happen that a lot has a bit too much scab or other spots on the skin, in which case I’d want to be able to sell them to the French-fry industry. It would be even better if they’re also suitable for use in our peeling company. We already have a multifunctional variety like that in the Maritiema. What we now need is a successor with a considerable plus. We’ve got one here that’s ready to go: number 26. It’s the BH 04 119, the result of a cross from breeder Evert Boerhave. The newcomer is 1 cm longer than the Maritiema, it has a much higher yield, a higher percentage of bigger tubers, is less prone to scab, and is resistant to wart disease. In short, this variety has the potential to take over first place from the Maritiema in due course. 14 Potato World 2014 • number 2 Pagina 13
