In this edition of Potato World magazine, we give details of the various examples of partnership. Both Aviko and HZPC think it is of great importance to have an adept and reliable partner in China to become successful there and also to continue to remain active in the market. In order to keep sustainable potato cultivation on the road, a wide range of chemicals is necessary so that responsible choices can be made. Partnership with the European government is a very important precondition this. Unfortunately, not all Member States agree with this, resulting in ever-changing rules of play to get plant protection chemicals approved. If you consider that it can easily cost hundreds of millions of euros to get a new product admitted, manufacturers think twice before they try and register a new product. The consequences can be that it will be increasingly difficult for farmers to make considered choices to grow a healthy potato crop. The fact that suppliers of crop protection chemicals also want to work in a sustainable way, is shown by the collaboration between Bayer Cropscience and the globally-operating Farm Frites. The project named Food Chain Partnership, starts with the home markets in the Netherlands and Belgium, but to roll such a project out to all the other countries in which you are active seems a logical step. The potato varieties in which companies want to distinguish themselves in countries such as China seem be coming under pressure. In Brussels, there are urgent discussions revolving around granting patents on plant characteristics. So it’s important to speed up publications on breakthroughs made in breeding. Once on paper, the breeding sector can at least continue to make progress within the regulations of the UPOV variety protection (International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants). Then at least you’ll be able to expand together as a sector and it will remain possible to enter into partnerships with customers all over the world. I very much look forward to hearing speakers at the World Potato Congress – which will be held in China this summer – on this subject.
