We immediately noticed the advertisement for Frites de la Maison (home-made chips) at the entrance of De L’autre Côté. Once at our table, we had as the plat du jour a brioche and a beautifully-presented roast potato. Lovely in the skin and sunny-yellow inside. Naturally, we had to ask our hospitable patron what variety our potatoes were. Agria was his answer. From the Netherlands, he quickly added, but supplied via the famous French wholesale market Rungis. We nearly fell of our chairs. In table potato country, in a bistro in Paris, Dutch potatoes form the basis of the menu. Delicious! Looking around, we saw French guests eating and loving the delicious, yellow purée. The homemade chips that the French woman at the next table was eating could also have come straight from a Dutch cafeteria; they’re increasingly offering their customers French fries from fresh potatoes. Would they already have watched the Power to the Pieper video in France? That’s a fast score for the Dutch table potato. You see, quality always tells. When we were leaving the restaurant, the French manager caught up with us again for a chat. And just as we were about to rush off to catch the Thalys home, he added that, at 2 euros a kilogram, he actually found the potatoes really expensive.
