CU LTIVATION AND TECHNOLOGY Record breaking potato trade in 2015 World potato trade was worth at least €10.8 billion or US$12.2 billion in 2015, a new record as values of product rose, according to the latest analysis by World Potato Markets, reports Cedric Porter. T he figure includes trade in fresh potatoes, potato products (including fries) and seed, but does not include potato starch. The value is up 8% on the 2014 figure and €300 million ahead of the previous record in 2013. The calculations are based on trade data from 75 countries that regularly publish import and export figures and while it includes all the major European, American and Asian countries there are notable exceptions including countries in the Arabian Peninsula. This means that actual trade is well in excess of €11 billion (US$12.5 billion). The volume of potatoes and product traded in 2015 was 19.289 million tonnes, which was only up 2% which means that the average price of product rose by 7%. There is one star performer in world potato trade and that are frozen French fries. During 2015 the value of fry trade was €5.243 billion, nearly half of the total trade figure and up more than 10% in the year.
