TRADE AND MARKET I NG Focus on ‘the variety as a brand’ at Fruit Logistica Weuthen invests in quality assessmentsOm beter zicht In order to get a better picture of the quality of potatoes in storage, the German company Weuthen has invested in a new quality monitoring system in recent years. The Dutchman Juliën Jeurissen, who’s been working as Weuthen’s Quality Manager, has helped set up the system. ‘Because we now take samples from all growers through a uniform method, we have much better information. With this information, our planners are better able to determine which lot can go to which factory. In that respect, you could compare Weuthen with a kind of potato traffic roundabout where it’s the trick to always take the right turn-off.’ The samples are collected by two perConcept Engineers accompanies partners For the first time, Tolsma-Grisnich, Kiremko and Concept Engineers make a joint appearance at Fruit Logistica. And with a message that’s not to be missed: ‘Together we are experts in storage, washing, grading and processing’. Tolsma-Grisnich and food processing line manufacturer Kiremko were always together at the show, but Concept Engineers, a company specialising in optic grading technology, has now joined them. Their collaboration is, in fact, far from new. Around the world, the trio has manent samplers when the crop is put into storage. After analysis, all relevant information is saved in a central database. The grower also receives that information. For the time being, the new quality system is only used for potatoes that are destined for the processing industry. Potato ladies promote the potato sector the calendar are ‘very elegantly’ made. The Bavarian potato alliance of growers and traders has already published the calendar three years running. What they mean to illustrate is that the potato is a healthy and natural product that belongs in the modern kitchen. And it provides a lot of free publicity because it’s something the media likes to write about. ‘Not least because the photographed ladies all originate ‘Isn’t this terribly women-unfriendly?’, asks a female visitor who’s just entering the Bayerischen Kartoffel GmbH stand. She points to a calendar showing sexy ladies with potatoes or potato products. After quickly leafing through the months of the year, however, she decides that the retro-style photos on from the sector. Most of them live on the farms where the potatoes are cultivated’, says Johann Dittenhauser of the Agropa trading company. The calendar is published in an edition of 3,500 copies. delivered complete projects and they also work actively together in the field of product development. ‘With the everincreasing fine tuning of the technique, you can’t even separate the different links any more’, says Commercial Director Theo van den Hurk of Concept Engineers. ‘It’s all about process optimisation.’ One of the strong points of the latest generation of optic graders is that they can inspect French fries and potato wedges in their free drop for colour and shape, for example. This means that each wedge can be viewed at almost 360 degrees, as opposed to 60 to 65 degrees with a camera above a belt. With these types of refinements, the processing companies get more net product from their potatoes. 26 Potato World 2016 • number 3 Pagina 25
