TRADE AND MARKET I NG New HZPC structure generates growth What was the main reason for fully restructuring the organisational structure of HZPC? ‘The main reason was that we want to provide more scope for new activities, while we also want to continue to give the necessary attention to our current products and markets. Important questions here are: how much time are we going to spend on this and, more importantly, who is going to do it? In the old structure, which is based on already existing products in existing markets, our employees often found their own way in new projects. There’s nothing wrong with that, but there’s less focus that way. After extensive discussions with our Supervisory Board, which had already started in 2014, we came to the conclusion that a focused vision will lead to a more professional approach. The current new structure is, in fact, an evolutionary change that has followed this decision.’ What exactly has changed now? ‘We’ve set up a holding company, which acts as an umbrella over all our HZPC activities. From this holding company three business units have been formed. The first unit is the Strategic Business Area Europe. This unit covers the trade within Europe and the export of seed potatoes from Europe to third countries. This is the largest unit by far, because it comprises all the HZPC Holland activities. The second unit is the Strategic Business Development Area. This unit can be considered the breeding ground for projects that need a lot of attention from the management in order to develop in the market. The aim is ultimately to move these projects to the regular operational routines. The third business unit is Stet Holland ‘There’s no longer any confusion between HZPC Holland and the holding company for our market partners’ BV. With the takeover of the KWS Potato activities, this company has expanded considerably and aims to increase its market shares in various countries in the coming years. Furthermore, HZPC Research & Development has been placed in a separate BV (private limited company) and the Intellectual Property Rights BV was set up to house the Plant Breeders’ Rights. What does this mean for the potato sector? ‘Our Dutch seed potato growers won’t notice anything. They’ll keep their contracts with HZPC Holland BV and we’ll continue to sell their potatoes in the pool. What has changed, though, is that I’ll no longer be leading HZPC Holland, but I have transferred these tasks to Lilian Escalon. An additional advantage is that there’s no longer confusion for our market partners between HZPC Holland and the holding company. We were able to take this step because HZPC isn’t a cooperative.
