The potato can play a substantial role in solving this problem. After all, the crop provides healthy and highquality food, requires relatively little water compared to cereals, and can grow in many parts of the world. The potato plant also produces a directly-edible yield a short time after planting. To instruct people in poorer countries how to grow and store potatoes, there are organisations such as Trias. People in these countries can then spread the information by sharing the knowledge and experience, in order to get rid of poverty in the world. This concept also fits in well with the potato crop. After all, one tuber produces about ten new ones and you can cut about eight French fries from each of them. Peru, the country I recently visited, has great wealth as well as poverty. Nowhere are there so many different potato types and varieties, which means a wealth of biodiversity. It’s good to see that Western European companies such as the Dutch HZPC support local projects there to preserve this world heritage of the plant kingdom for the future. A few months later, during our tour of the breeding companies in the Netherlands, we were presented with a huge wish list of characteristics that the breeders want to see in their new French-fry varieties. Wild potato varieties play an important role in this, for example as suppliers of resistance genes. The crop that has survived in a harsh climate for at least eight thousand years has a wealth of useful genetic characteristics. By jointly preserving this as an international potato sector, future generations can also benefit from solutions to problems that we do not yet even know about. 37 The World of PotatoResearch 39 New ‘sustainable’ diet underestimates value of potatoes 42 PotatoWorld dish 42 PW Agenda For me, caring for the world heritage of the ancient potato fits in well with the new CIP initiative ‘Imagine a World without Potatoes’. In an original way, the Peruvian organisation offers companies and institutions worldwide the opportunity to share and spread this idea among the population in order to gain more support for this healthy food, the potato.
