TRADE AND MARKET I NG Lower potato prices kept 2018 trade growth in check, but new records expected in 2019 lion tonnes, the largest category by volume and the largest total ever, although just 0.8% higher than in 2017. The value of those exports was down 8.4% to €2.694 billion (US$3.182 billion). The average price was down 9.1% to US$231/tonne or US$284/tonne, the lowest average value since 2015. The value of trade in chips/crisps and related dehydrated products continues to grow steadily. In 2018 exports were up 2.8% to 1.127 million tonnes, with the value up 3.8% to €2.209 billion (US$2.609 billion). The average price of the category was up 1.0% to €1 960/tonne (US$2 315/tonne). Flakes were the fourth largest category in 2018, with exports worth €500.1 million (US$590.6 million), 7.6% up on the 2017 figure. The volume of flake trade was up 2.4% to 447 454 tonnes. The average price was €1 118/tonne (US$1 320/tonne), 5.8% up on the previous year. Sweet-potato exports were up 5.6% in value to €461.7 million (US$545.3 million), with the volume of exports up 10.4% to 682 717 tonnes. Sweet-potato prices were at the lowest value they have been since 2013 at an average of €676/ tonne (US$799/tonne), 4.4% lower than they were in 2017. Seed exports were very stable with export volumes up just 1.0% to 1.767 million tonnes, although that was the highest total ever recorded. The value of that trade was up 6.2% to €847.876 million (US$1.002 million). The average price of seed exports in 2018 was 5.3% higher at €480/tonne (US$567/tonne). Flour exports were at 101 850 tonnes, 1.3% more than in 2017. The total value of that trade was €88.3 million (US$104.3 million), 6.8% up on the year before.
