In the year ending April 2019, Canadian exports were at 1.067 million tonnes – 8 000 less than the year before and 16,200 tonnes more than in 2014. US exports in the year ending April 2019 was 0.999 million tonnes, almost the same as the year before and 45 000 tonnes more than in 2014. In early 2018 the rate fell to as low as US$1=€0.80, while a year before that it was as high as US$1=€0.95, demonstrating the volatility of the euro compared to the US dollar. The weather has always played a major role in the potato market, but its influence appears to becoming even more important. That will challenge growers as they seek to grow potatoes against a backdrop of more droughts and periods of heavy rainfall.
