PW-ACTUA What happens in Vegas, enters the potato chain Learning, meeting and doing business are the most important characteristics of the North American trade fair Potato Expo. On 14 and 15 January 2020, the North American potato chain will meet in Las Vegas. On these days, the Potato Expo trade fair and congress will take place. Every year, potato professionals meet to do business and keep abreast of the latest developments in the field. Learning, meeting and doing business are the most important characteristics of the North American trade fair Potato Expo. Every time, around 2,000 people from the North American potato sector travel to the event. Every year, the organising National Potato Council chooses a different, attractive location where the many growers – who make up more than half the number of visitors – can relax and enjoy themselves, as many of them have their business in the often-cold regions of the continent. As the European potato varieties are becoming increasingly popular in America, many European trading companies are also present to show their latest varieties. And in their wake follow the mechanisation companies. This is necessary, because the European varieties require different cultivation, harvesting and storage regimes than large American varieties such as Russet Burbank. In addition, labour is becoming an increasingly expensive production factor. As a result, the demand for mechanisation on farms and packaging companies is also increasing rapidly. The more than 180 exhibitors offer the target group an excellent platform to have their questions about the market answered. Digital leadership In addition to the many business meetings and informal gatherings, the organisation also offers a wide range of seminars. To this end, people from the sector have been invited to take a close look at a wide range of developments related to cultivation such as fertilisation, precision farming and marketing. In addition to the technology and trends in the potato sector itself, the organisation also chooses to inspire visitors with lectures that stimulate the overall development. This year, the well-known speaker and writer Erik Qualman, a technology specialist and digital leadership expert and author of the books Socialnomics and What Happens in Vegas Stays on Youtube, will explain the 5 simple habits of digital leaders to the approximately 2,000 potato professionals. A challenging lecture in this time of upcoming precision farming and the increasing importance of social media such as Facebook and Twitter. He will explain how potato professionals can take full advantage of everything the digital age has to offer. In addition to the opportunities offered by the fast medium, he will also reflect on avoiding common pitfalls that can damage the digital image of the user. Best-selling author Qualman will explain what modern leadership means and describe how an effective leader in the digital world operates. He believes that, in order to succeed, people need to adapt leadership skills to the needs of today’s digital world. What doesn’t change is that nothing happens without action and it is necessary to develop a vision with clear goals in order to get where you want to be. Furthermore, there will also be a live cooking demonstration by the well-known American television chef, Jeff Henderson. For more information: www.potato-expo.com Largest drum dryer ever The manufacturers Idaho Steel (USA) and Kiremko from Woerden (NL) have, in close cooperation, recently made a new drum dryer for potato flakes/purée. This is a version with a very high capacity of no less than 4,500 kilograms of flakes/ purée per hour. According to the manufacturers, it is the largest drum dryer ever built. This also incorporates the most modern technology and knowledge. A first version of the large drum dryer was manufactured in parts at Idaho Steel in Idaho Falls and then shipped to the Netherlands. Part by part the drum dryer has been assembled by a Dutch processor whose name has not yet been revealed. According to Idaho Steel and Kiremko, the new drum dryer is the largest ever built. New technology has also ensured that a better product now rolls out of the tumble dryer. The flakes and purée are of the highest quality, according to Kiremko. In addition to this first delivery to the Netherlands, another 6 dryers were made that went to customers in the United States. ● Potato World 2019 • number 4 15 Pagina 14
