CU LTIVATION AND TECHNOLOGY Mostly dry weather, lots of interest and plenty of novelties Roller set of Bijlsma Hercules cleans itself ‘Superskjin’ Simple box filler for start-up fruit and Looking for an afFordable, easy-to-use and high-quality box filler for potatoes? Perhaps the new NSP from the Polish manufacturer KMK is an option. An example of the fully-stainless steel filler, complete with de-stacker and weighing equipment, could be admired on the outdoor grounds of the potato show. Kees den Boer, owner of Den Boer Agri of Poortvliet, is an importer and salesman for KMK in the Netherlands and Belgium and gave an explanation on the spot. ‘This is an ideal machine for smaller and start-up entrepreneurs in the fruit and vegetable world that are always short of people to do the filling work’, he explains. The boxes involved are the wellknown 40 by 60 centimetre ones used for home sales or delivReverse rotating the rollers on the cleaning unit in order to clean it at high speed, is done manually at Bijlsma Hercules by means of a separate button. ‘Superskjin’, in the Frisian language is the most appropriate description of the renewed cleaning unit on the hoppers of Bijlsma Hercules of Franeker, according to representative Jan van de Kooi. Thanks to the recent installation of a reverserotation device, the manufacturer now guarantees a constantly-cleaned potato flow, i.e. a super clean product in the store and/or on the truck. Reverse-rotating the rollers, to clean them at high speed, is done manually with a separate button on the control box of the hopper, or with the remote control. As soon as you press the button, the unloading surface stops rotating. The rollers on the cleaning rollers then continue to rotate for a while until the potatoes are removed. The duration of the continued rotation is adjustable from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. The rollers then stop and immediately after that, at the standard high speed setting of 1000 revolutions per minute, they spin in the other direction. If the rollers are extremely dirty, the speed can be increased even more. The time interval of the reverse-rotation is also infinitely adjustable. Then the rollers on the unit rotate in the forward direction again and turn on the unloading bed. The loosened soil tare comes back on the rollers, but now drops through onto the soil/tare discharge belt. Bijlsma Hercules has deliberately opted for a manually-operated version, explains Van der Kooi. In fact, there are also manufacturers that install an automatic function that allows roller cleaning to be carried out at adjustable intervals. In practice, however, once an interval has been set, it hardly ever gets adjusted. And that, of course, defeats the purpose. So it’s better to adjust the cleaning manually when it’s really necessary, Van der Kooi said. With some other novelties, such as traffic lights so the tipper can be easily driven up in front of the hopper and stopped, a version with a 2.40 m wide input as demonstrated at PotatoEurope costs between 40,000 and 42,000 euros, excluding VAT. Miedema / Dewulf launches Clean-Boost for clean rolls Clean-Boost is the name for the roller cleaner of the cleaning units on the hoppers of Miedema/Dewulf. With the activation of this function, it is possible to increase the speed of the rollers considerably in order to flick off any adhesive soil that was clinging to them. ‘If the function is switched on, it will work automatically, so the cleaning function will turn itself on at regular intervals,’ explains product manager Christiaan Poot. The duration of the intervals is infinitely adjustable with a separate knob. ‘If the function is on, the bunker belt stops and the rollers turn until they’ve first removed all the potatoes. Then, at high speed, the rollers start to clean themselves. The duration of this is also adjustable. After a cleaning session, the normal unloading and cleaning process starts again. At PotatoEurope, the function doesn’t need to be used because of the drought, but these conditions can, of course, be very different’, laughs Paw. By activating the Clean-Boost, it is possible to significantly increase the speed of the rollers on the cleaning units in order to flick off any clinging soil. 34 Potato World 2019 • number 4 Pagina 33
