CU LTIVATION AND TECHNOLOGY Successful storage Since 2016, the Belgian potato growers Sylvie and Benoît (47) Delcourt have been storing 10,000 tons of potatoes of the Fontane variety in a modern storage facility in Anseroeul. The success of the storage, according to the family, begins with the cultivation, after which Delcourt Agri does everything possible to store the crop optimally until June. Even after an extreme growing season like the one in 2018. begins in A hundred metres outside the picturesque village of Anseroeul, a stately potato storehouse in neutral grey colours rises up in the Walloon landscape. It is located at the base of the Flemish Kluisberg peak, in the middle of the traditional Bintje kingdom of Wallonia. In the centre of the village is the monumental parental farmhouse of Sylvie and Benoît Delcourt, located right next to the local church and opposite the local village café. The enormous new storehouse has three units that can store a total of 10,000 tons of French-fry potatoes. No longer of the Bintje variety, however, but the new king of Wallonia, the Fontane. These are quietly waiting until June when they will travel out into the world as the real Belgian fries. This year, all the potatoes that Delcourt cultivates and buys from growers in the region will go to French-fry manufacturer Clarebout in the Flemish town of Nieuwkerke. A 60 kilometre trip and a comparable distance to the new location of the Belgian family business in the Walloon Frameries municipality. Contract cultivation forms the basis The construction of the storehouse in 2016 was part of the planned development of the farm. After having worked for ten years as an advisor for the Walloon chain organisation Fiwap, Delcourt took over the business from his parents in 2005.
