Having just completed my studies at Agricultural College, I was immediately allowed to help think, write and take pictures (black-and-white) in a potato sector that was then changing in a revolutionary way. From that moment, Dutch seed potato export and potato processing took on a huge, unstoppable momentum. While the Bintje was the biggest variety in Europe in those days, an impressive number of names have now been added among which the over 100-year-old Bintje is slowly fading away. Today, professionalisation and scale enlargement are the main topics in the potato sector. An increasing number of companies are merging or are closely collaborating to strengthen their positions in an increasingly international world. We have also grown as a publisher with the introduction of PotatoWorld magazine, for example, and the publications of the ‘Potato Diseases’ and the ‘Potato Breeding’ handbooks. And there will be many more new developments in the years to come. You could rightly come to the conclusion that craftsmanship and creativity are important characteristics with which players in the sector can distinguish themselves in the market. Look at the young organic grower Krispijn van den Dries. With his Pop Up shop the Potato Boutique, for a period of two weeks, he told the wonderful story of the potato to consumers in Amsterdam and sold a wide range of special potato varieties. If you can create a unique position in the market, it doesn’t really matter whether the yields vary significantly or not. And definitely this year, with higher worldwide potato yields than the long-term average and the generallygood quality, unique marketing is necessary to achieve a break-even price. At this point, many potato trading companies are devising comparable strategies. For example, what to think about the colourful WOW? Perupas for the hotel and catering industry. You can read all about it in this inspiring issue of PotatoWorld magazine. Jaap Delleman Potato World 2015 • number 1 3 Pagina 2
