Record breaking potato trade in 2015 CU LTIVATION AND TECHNOLOGY are local companies, although others have teamed up with international companies with a number of North American and European processors signed up to joint ventures in China for instance. Countries such as Iran and India have also established fry plants and have started to export low volumes of product to neighbouring markets. Other potato products that performed well included chips and dehy that was up 6.0% to nearly €1.8 billion and flakes up 12.7% to €445 million. On the fresh side, exports of ware potatoes rose steadily by 5.6% to €2.202 billion, although there was a 11% drop in EU potato exports by volumes over the year. Seed exports were down by 9% in volume and nearly 10% in value to €678 million as growers cut back plantings due to reduced returns in 2014. The standout fresh performer has been sweet potatoes. The value of trade in sweet potatoes was up 41% to €262 million in 2015 driven by a 17% increase in the average price and a 20% increase in volume.
