PW-ACTUA Agrico and Lantmännen Lantbruk started Agrico Nordic The Dutch potato cooperative Agrico and the Swedish Lantmännen Lantbruk have formed a new company: Agrico Nordic. The goal of this new company is to produce and sell seed potatoes in Sweden. Agrico Nordic will hold the exclusive right to represent the varieties produced by Agrico and its affiliated breeders. The company will trial and introduce new varieties. The production of seed for table, ware and starch varieties will be allocated to experienced Swedish growers. Agrico Nordic will sell seed on the Swedish market and, in addition, export seed in consultation with Agrico. Lantmännen Lantbruk will bring the seed of its members onto the market. Moreover, Agrico Nordic will supervise the import of Agrico seed from the Netherlands, it will sell table and ware potatoes and set up import programmes. The formation of Agrico Nordic is an important milestone for both Agrico and Lantmännen Lantbruk. Agrico managing director Ineke Mastenbroek is happy with this new company: ‘The position of Agrico in the Swedish potato market has strengthened and Finland will also benefit in the long run. By intensifying our relationship with experienced growers, we can extend Agrico’s varieties and its affiliated breeders in Sweden’. Agrico is one of the largest seed potato merchants in the world and it plays an important role in the trade of table and ware potatoes in Western Europe. In addition, Agrico organises import programmes for its customers in the supermarket sector. Through its subsidiary, Agrico Research, which operates within an international network of which the Swedish Svalöf Weibull is also part, the cooperative has also an extensive breeding and research programme. ● APH Group implements large potato project in China The last few years, China is developing its potato industry rapidly. Machines and equipment is often imported from The Netherlands as the technology suits the Chinese circumstances very well. Professional potato producers prefer to work with reliable imported machines rather than locally produced equipment, developed for smaller farms. Potatoes in China are used for fresh consumption (as a kind of vegetable) as well as for processing into starch (to produce for example noodles), flakes, chips and French fries. All major potato processing multinationals are present in China. ● A 6 row Cramer Marathon Jumbo planting machine with a Chinese made tractor. APH Group implemented this year a large potato project in Inner Mongolia, in the Northern part of China. Over 130 containers with machines from APH Group members, Cramer, Koning, Baselier, Dewulf, Bijlsma, Omnivent Techniek as well as from Wifo, Hardi and Kuhn were shipped. Three Dutch engineers, together with a team of Chinese specialists of APH Group Omnivent Beijing are present to mount the machines and put them into operation. Near the potato storage the containers get unloaded. Potato World 2009 • number 2 11 Pagina 10
