PotatoEurope 2009 Nicolás Bevilacqua, Uruguay After negotiations with Wouter Mutsaerts of Stet Holland, Nicolás Bevilacqua of Dalintor has a few minutes for us. This importer of seed potatoes, machinery and fertiliser is having a busy day. The potato sector is not very big in the self-supporting country of Uruguay, he explains. There are only three million inhabitants, hardly one-fifth of the Luke Qu, China Dutch population. The number of potato merchants can be counted on one hand. Most potato importers have more than potatoes alone in their propagating material portfolio. A show like PotatoEurope is for them an ideal opportunity to look for novelties;everything concerning cultivation is available. Moreover, there are modern items for sale in Just arrived from China and busy phoning with his mobile to his ear, Luke Qu is trying to get the hang of the plan of the showground. He is looking for the stand of Mooij, a Dutch manufacturer of storage equipment. Qu represents this brand in China, as he shows us on his business card a little later. The text on his card shows that Qu is also Johan Steyn, South-Africa Europe and that is what the growers in Uruguay are interested in. He came to PotatoEurope for the first time in 2005. He thinks the potato show nicer, more spacious and more professional than four years’ ago. He hopes to come again next time, that’s certain. involved in more import trade, among other things, for Struik, Allround, Hardi and Rauch. As a mechanisation specialist, he wants to investigate every aspect of the show, both inside and outside, to find useable novelties for Chinese farmers. Kamal Ali and Salah Abu-Mousa are leafing through an edition of PotatoWorld magazine. They seem to be interested in just about everything that has to do with potatoes and, when asked they confirm that. Ali tells us that he has had ties with the Dutch potato sector ever since 1996, and he likes to come here on business. He is general manager of the Jordan Green Works which, among other things, imports seed potatoes. The manager likes to do business here because he can trust the product. ‘You have a good inspection system and your inspection service, the Dutch General Inspection Service for Agricultural Seed and Seed Potatoes (NAK), is well-known all over the world. What we have come for here at PotatoEurope are varieties for chips and table potatoes. One of our business contacts is Semagri. We buy the Hermes, Luciana, Diane and Denise varieties from them. ’ ‘Do you know the journal Chips, I am in it next week with write up.’ This proud piece of information is given not long after we asked him to fill out a questionnaire about our own potato magazine. The fact is that Chips is the Potato magazine for South Africa. Steyn is a representative of the mechanisation company ARTA. They represent the Grimme and SKALS brands, among others. The South African is here to look at the latest developments in the domain of potato lifters and grading machinery. He is also looking at irrigation installations. He has brought along fifteen customers, so that they can get to know the Dutch potato sector. It was instructive and also very pleasant and welcoming, is Steyn’s verdict about his visit to the potato show. Potato World 2009 • number 4 17 Pagina 16
