PotatoEurope 2009 The potato as an art object Seed potato merchant Meijer had fitted out a complete potato gallery at PotatoEurope. The finest potatoes of the company were shown here as if they were an objet d’art. It seemed that this approach attracted the visitors, because the stand was continuously full. It was managing director Jan Muijsers himself who acted as gallery owner and who showed us the art nouveau in the stand. The Lady Annas in a glass bowl, for example. ‘A real farmers‘ chip variety, excellent for the current situation; no bruising and greying. They store very well, have excellent baking qualities and, more importantly, it is Pallida-resistant. A bit further on, there was another newcomer: the Jazzy, attractively displayed in a transparent tube. It is a splendid and tasty table potato, suitable for salads, but also very good for fast cooking in the microwave, according to an enthusiastic Muijsers. For growers, it has the distinctive characteristic that this variety produces a great many tubers per plant in the sought-after size. Spotlight on Rooster At IPM, the spotlights were literally and figuratively on the Rooster variety, framed by a Dutch recipe for a delicious Rooster salad. The Rooster variety is a brand in Ireland and in Great Britain. This is thanks to the British packaging company Bartlett, which registered the variety name as a brand name. Each bag with these potatoes has boasted the name ROOSTER in bold letters ever since. According to Bartlett’s international manager Tim Hammond, its turnover rose in a few years’ time from 0 to 500 tons a week. But it is also due to the high-profile TV advertisements and the efforts of two British top cooks. The variety is amazingly versatile and can be used as salads and chips, and it can be grown with regular and organic farming methods For the organic product range, Bartlett received the prestigious Great Taste Gold 09 award from the British Guild of Fine Food. Handy grading belt behind receiving hopper At PotatoEurope, Miedema showed that it knows everything about storage and that it can provide well-thoughtout ideas. An example of a well thought-out idea is a new unit with a grading belt that fits on the hopper. The belt runs lengthways behind the hopper. Both sides are fitted with a grading plateau on which the potato grader can safely stand. Also handy are the tubes in which you can deposit haulm, clods and rotten tubers. These tubes are attached above the ground belt of the hopper. Because of its higher mounting, it is also easier to attach above the filler opening of the duo belt or the store loader. This is also handy for loading or unloading difficult areas in the store. The extra charge for the unit is 4,000 euros. 20 Potato World 2009 • number 4 Pagina 19
