PotatoEurope 2009 Anti-light print Visitors who were in search of new packaging had a great time at the stand of packaging manufacturer NNZ. One of the novelties there was opaque polyethylene packaging. This prevents potatoes from turning green under shop lighting. While the idea is not new, the material is, explained Lene Hultén of the Danish NNZ branch. ‘The foil has a thin layer of paint printing that can break up the light rays. The advantage of a print is that you can combine it with strong foil. So far, any light-suppressing plastic without a print layer has been less effective’, says Hultén. Personal attention at HZPC The stand of seed potato merchant HZPC focused more specifically on its own field staff rather than potatoes and varieties this time. To show this to the visitor in a clear way, the company had had portraits made of all its field staff while at work. All these portraits hung on the stand wall with the catch phrase ‘Personal attention is our slogan’. One of the field staff is Hans Rozen. and his working area is the Dutch province of North Brabant. He is the consultant for 31 growers with a joint surface area of 640 hectares of seed potatoes. He advises them in matters such as choice of variety, fertilisation, crop protection and the date of haulm killing. In addition, he is also responsible for the scheduling of grading times of lots, and delivery. At the beginning of September, he had the first lot graded for delivery in Pakistan. Manter presents Presenter More packaging news was on display at Manter’s, but then for larger-size bags. The machinery manufacturer had a fully-automated bag-attaching and filling machine on display. The machine is called the Presenter and is able to pick up any kind of jute or mesh bag, explained Willem de Jong. No extra strengthening tape or strips around the filler opening are necessary with this machine. It can be linked to any semiautomated bag-sewing machine. The capacity is twelve bags per minute. That is fast enough to keep up with most sewing machines. The Manter Presenter is for sale for a starting price of 65,000 euros. Potato World 2009 • number 4 21 Pagina 20
