g TRADE AND MARKETING When a grower is not happy about his seed, he will go in search of better fields, which are usually found at seed potato growers higher up in the mountains. growing their own crisp potatoes In the past thirty years, potato cultivation on the Philippines has received a lot of foreign aid, both from Germany and the Netherlands. The island of Mindanoa’s marketing disadvantage is the great distance to the capital, Manilla. Transport by sea makes the potatoes much more expensive than transport by land, as on the island of Luzon. Two crops a year The current potato acreage of the Philippines is approximately 7,000 hectares according to official counts. However, there are also statistics that set the acreage at 10,000 hectares. The reason for this difference is that many Filipinos grow two crops in one year and the figures of the second crop are included in the latter statistics. The average yield is 15 tons per hectare so that the total national production is approximately 105,000 tons a year; the subsequent average potato consumption per Filipino is therefore 1.3 kg a year. The total potato import, both fresh and processed, is approximately 80,000 tons, according to the Philippines statistics bureau. Assuming that 2 kg of potatoes are needed for 1 kg of chips, and 4 kg for crisps, the total import comes to about 125,000 tons. Moreover, the country also imports approximately 10,000 tons of potato starch. No mechanisation Most potato fields are found in the mountains in the northern part of the large northern island of Luzon. This Potato World 2010 • number 2 29 Pagina 28
