TRADE AND MARKETING Amazing ideas at busy Fruit Logistica Busy, busy, busy. Chock-a-block aisles with a great many Russian visitors this year, who are still purposefully looking for suppliers of food such as consumption potatoes. So Fruit Logistica in Berlin is the place to be. Also for the Dutch potato trade. They are naturally greeting the Russians with open arms and are starting to negotiate some business for the coming season. And it is quite obvious that there are again many new trends, such as amazing product ideas. A nd the enormous attraction that Fruit Logistica has been able to generate over the years is quite remarkable. In barely three days, the entire fruit and vegetable world can be seen shuffling along the endless aisles. As always, this trend-setting event took place again in Berlin. The city is in a particularly central location for the European fruit and vegetable markets. Easy to reach with all manner of transport, with a select array of hotels and – according to the Berlin guidebook – 7,200 taxis that guarantee quick and easy transport within the metropolis. For many years now, the show has seen a wide range of potato and related businesses. As Fruit Logistica always takes place in the middle of the trading season, the actual state of the market is often the talk of the show. Also in this edition, the potato trade and its visitors talk about the latest developments in the sector for the full three days. It even starts on the eve of the show during the Berlin Kartoffelabend. This event – already the third edition – enjoys an increasing popularity every year. The special situation of this season’s demand-oriented market will most definitely have contributed to the high numbers of visitors. The mood among the attending traders was therefore elated due to the high market prices, since high prices give the trade the opportunity to sell the potatoes with generous margins. Market authority par excellence A few Dutch traders have descended on the stand of the German potato trading company Weuthen. They are grouped around director Ferdi Buffen, who is known to be a market authority par excellence. Curious, they question him about the current situation and that of the coming months. What do you expect of the earlies? Will they be here soon and how many? Buffen likes to be questioned and realises that he has access to important sources of information. In a serious voice, he reports that a much bigger acreage of potatoes will be planted in the early cropping area of the Pfalz. As soon as conditions are favourable, farmers will start working there at full capacity. Dutch traders question Ferdi Buffen about the current situation and that of the coming months, from left to right: Michel de Nijs, Wilhelm Meyer, Martin de Visser, Ferdi Buffen, Arie de Nijs and Johan van der Stee. A discussion with Russian traders is characteristic of the annual increase in export, Heero Gramsma (l) says. Potato World 2011 • number 2 13 Pagina 12
