PW-ACTUA India opens up ‘breeders rights’ to the potato India has recently opened up breeders’ rights to various crops, among which the potato. This opening-up process gives potato breeding companies the possibilty to seriously apply for breeders’ rights in India. Until recently, breeding companies were cautious about introducing new varieties. According to Plantum NL, the current legislation that relates to breeders’ rights dates back to 2001. This has changed now as a result of new legislation. The new law gives breeders protection for their varieties. Similarly, Indian farmers can now use improved varieties, with respect to productivity and resistance, for example. The opening up of breeders rights gives Indian farmers an entrée to new and improved varieties. Even in India they can see that this may lead to quality improvement. This also gives the sector a better economic position, at least where export is concerned. From 6 to 10 June, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation is organising a trade mission for breeding companies that want to do business with India. This mission will be led by Mr Henk Bleker, State Secretary of the Ministry. ● Miedema introduces Stronga trailers Miedema machine manufacturer from Winsum has recently added two sharply priced trailer models to its range. These are a two-axle vehicle, the Miedema-Stronga BL700, and a three-axle one, the Miedema-Stronga BL850. The BL700 has a capacity of 24 cubic metres and the BL 850 31 of cubic metres. According to Miedema, the new trailers are the result of a partnership between Miedema and Stronga from Great Britain. Stronga is particularly known in the Netherlands for manufacturing specially designed trailers and hook lift systems. According to Miedema, these two new Miedema-Stronga models are worthy follow-ups to the existing Miedema HST trailer range. ‘They exactly meet the wishes of demanding crop growers: robustly built, complete and sharply priced and with a stable value’, Miedema claims. Flattened shafts The Miedema-Stronga trailers are equipped with a long, springed pole, in which the hydraulic support is incorporated. The frame has flattened rear shafts to avoid the hopper being damaged during operation and it has hinged rear lights. The standard version also includes a Hardox wear plate floor and sides in a single unit. Moreover, these trailers are fitted with heavy ADR axles and standard Michelin Cargo X-bib 710/50R26.5 tyres. Fixed mudguards on the body, adjustable mudguards on the frame and an inspection lamp in the hopper are also part of the standard equipment. Both trailers have hydraulic controls and leaf springs. The two-axle trailer can also be fitted with fixed axles on a pendeltandem and the tree-axle variant has its own power-take off driven hydraulic system in front for the lift cylinder. The new trailers are available for the attractive starting price of 30,300 euros, exclusive of VAT. ● 8 Potato World 2011 • number 2 Pagina 7
