TRADE AND MARKETING Fruit Logistica: World Network Back to the old days NNZ, producer of packaging materials from Groningen, has built an impressive stand at Fruit Logistica. Every possible type of packaging in the NNZ range has been brought to Berlin and are in the spotlights here. It is very important to be here, is the opinion of Unit Manager Han de Vreede. ‘We’re meeting customers and suppliers from the whole world. We can show them new packaging materials and listen to their personal requirements. Moreover, we move around Fruit Logistica ourselves to see what the new trends are and what our colleagues have to offer. I’ve done my rounds, but haven’t discovered anything new yet. On the other hand, we’ve come here with new products, such as a small jute bag, which holds 2.5 kg of potatoes. This is an idea from one of our customers, who wants to see the old type of bags back on the shelf. That appeals to me as well. I grew up with the jute of the flax bags. The smell is especially good. Another innovation is our new super-lightweight, carry-fresh net and foil bags. The saving on weight varies from 10 to 40 percent. Another clever idea from a customer is this paper bag with a see-through window. They’re intended for a product that the customers can weigh and fill themselves.’ A few Dutch customers are currently investigating whether the potatoes – like other vegetables – can be sold straight from a box or crate, according to De Vreede. ‘This year, the theme in our stand is organic growing. We develop the organic varieties ourselves, we have 50 hectares of consumption potatoes and 200 hectares of seed to take care of’, Van Hoogen discloses. The organic table potatoes are marketed by our Network place For the Agrico cooperative, Fruit Logistica is primarily a place for networking. ‘The entire fruit and vegetable world is walking around here at Fruit Logistica’, Director Jan van Hoogen tells us. ‘It’s the ideal moment to meet as many new and existing customers as possible. The timing of the show is also good for us. We’re more or less finished with the overseas exports, and the sales in Europe are just starting. What Van Hoogen has noticed is that there are fewer visitors from Eastern Europe at the show this year. He thinks that the reason is not only that there is less interest in Fruit Logistica, but also that the weather conditions are very bad there. ‘It’s not so easy to travel from Eastern Europe to Berlin right now.’ Like every year, Agrico has a theme. subsidiary, Leo de Cock and Sons, in Purmerend. This packaging company has a special organic packaging line and has had a new packaging made for the organic potato recently. A few examples are on display at the Agrico stand.
