This gives absolute confidence for the coming years’, Sepers points out.’ IMC-agro’s Zichenko is one of their prospective customers, who is actively looking for varieties that suit his farm conditions. Last year, he tested 35 varieties from the German merchant Europlant. Only two of them could survive the hot climate. Before official cultivation is allowed, government permission is first required. The authority responsible for that is the Ukrainian institute for plant testing. In the coolness of his office, director Petro Vasyliuk tells us that he tests varieties at nine different locations in the country. In total, his institute is currently testing 150 varieties. The total cycle takes four years and during that period about a dozen requirements are tested. After those four years, the institute issues a recommendation, which includes information about the best locations for varieties. A few additional requirements are that a variety must have added value for the market and certainly must not have been genetically modified.
