French edition with European style CULTIVATION AND TECHNOLOGY New Pouchain attracted a great deal of attention Sarl Pouchain has been manufacturing agricultural machinery for 25 years now and has a branch in the French Villers-AuFlos. The brand is virtually unknown outside France, particularly where potato lifters are concerned. This has to do with the fact that they are only suitable for cultivation methods that use 90 cm-wide ridges, which have been standard in France for years now. Pouchain has manufactured self-prOpelled potato lifters for some years and has recently added a new 4-row version, which is also available in the 90-centimetre version. This is the PDT12. The frame is slightly different from the more wellknown lifters because the motor is placed in front and the cabin is central. Further technology is largely similar and Pouchain also uses hydraulically-driven lifter belts and cleaning units. Hydraulics is popular at Pouchain, because the manufacturer has been using it for years for its more well-known chicory lifters. Sturdy planting machines Sturdy Miedema novelties are the 6-row and 8-row CP62P and CP82P cup belt planters. The 6-row version was displayed in the PotatoEurope grounds. One of the tricks of these planting giants is that the working width of the planting elements can be adjusted. They can be switched from 75 centimetres to 38 inches. As the size mark indicates, the machine is suitable for both European and far-a-way countries. The machine is particularly popular in the United States. A number of 6-row machines have already been sold to potato growers in Florida and Wisconsin. Extra-heavy springs have been especially mounted on the covering discs for areas in America with stony soils. For hilly countries, an option for a hydraulically-driven moveable basis can be supplied so that there is a constant supply of potatoes to the cup feeding. All cup feeding belts are equipped with a hydraulic motor. The design also includes the possible installation of a ridging hood. The bunker contents are 1,150 kilograms per row. Four large wheels with tyre size 320/85 R28 are mounted to improve the carrying capacity. They can be steered and the maximum wheel turning is 8 degrees. The starting price for a reasonably complete 6-row machine is 70,000 euros. ● Leo Hanse en Jaap Delleman Sustainability Award for Restrain Awards were also presented at this French edition of PotatoEurope, among which the Victoires Profil. It was the British company Restrain who was awarded within the sustainable technology category. Director Dirk Garos received the award from Patrick Trillon, chairman of the UNPT, the organisation of French potato growers. Restrain has been manufacturing ethylene generators for the inhibition of sprouting in potatoes for some years. They recently marketed two new models. They are a light-weight model suitable for large storehouses up to 6,000 tons and a model for smaller stores up to 1,000 tons. Restrain owes the sustainability award to the application of ethylene, a natural product that doesn’t leave harmful residues after usage. It is completely safe and that is what particularly appeals to the French supermarkets. For this reason, Restrain was recently given the full go-ahead for use in consumption potatoes in Holland also.
