TRADE AND MARKETING ‘GLOBALGAP much easier-to-understand’ The GLOBALGAP directives have been tightened up with effect from 1 January 2012. Initially, this meant a great deal of extra work for the Klompe-Van de Linde partnership in Dreischor. ‘But it has also become much more manageable’, says Gilles Klompe, who is responsible for the administrative tasks within the partnership. ‘If you keep all the data in the computer up to date, you won’t make many mistakes. You have immediate access to your data, for example during the new, unannounced NAK AGRO inspections. At moments like this, the disadvantage of more administration is quickly compensated.’ T he first change with which Klompe was confronted was the filling out of a digital self-appraisal list. Before January 2012, he filled out a pen-and-paper version every year, which is, in fact, still possible. A new digital list was drawn up for the amended GLOBALGAP, which includes a number of additional questions. There is, for example, a distinction between important (Major) and less important (Minor) appraisals. In the case of Major points, the entrepreneurs are required to give an explanation of how certain set requirements have been satisfied. ‘The very first completion of the digital list takes extra time’, Klompe admits. ‘The advantage is that you don’t have to fill out the new digital version anew every year. You only need to fill out any eventual changes. This selfappraisal list is an annual task, but that was already the case, according to Klompe. Writing down data more often Another change that the farmer is being faced with is the obligation to have the cupboards for plant protection products in the storage room made from nonabsorbent material. ‘On our farm, the racks were made of plain wood. These have now been varnished, so that they can’t absorb anything any more’, Klompe shows us. Improvement is still possible here though, such as a folder for a more frequent registration of our stock. ‘Under the last GLOBALGAP version, you only needed to keep the invoices. We now have to register every quarter what and how much we have in stock. If you like, Ten percent of GLOBALGAP participants can also be confronted with surprise inspections. ‘You shouldn’t take this too literally, because the participants will always receive a 48-hour advance warning’, says Robert Minnaar (l) of NAK AGRO.
