TRADE AND MARKETING PotatoEurope 2013: The next level On 11 and 12 September 2013, PotatoEurope 2013 will be held in Emmeloord, the Netherlands. The theme of the Dutch edition of this major international potato event is: ‘The Next Level’, a title that was chosen by the organisation to present the potato sector with a panoramic view towards the year 2050. Various players from the international potato sector will give their views on this theme about the future. At the end of April, Mayor Aucke van der Werff of the Dutch municipality of Noordoostpolder planted the first potato of the Innovator variety in the 30-hectare demonstration field. The field is owned by the CAH Vilentum School Farm Foundation, a training centre for higher agricultural education (HAO). Planting took place under excellent conditions. At PotatoEurope, in September, over 200 businesses and organisations from at home and abroad will commend their produce or services. These businesses and organisations will be accommodated in pavilions that have a total surface area of over 10,000 m2. ‘There is special attention for international visitors; there will be an international lounge, for example, focusing on the potato industry of China, Russia and India. In addition to the outside exhibition, major manufacturers will lift and store potatoes with stateof-the art machinery’, organisers Anne Mast and Paulien Hoftijzer tell us. The Next Level theme will be put across with the latest modern multimedia such as Facebook and Twitter as well as in demonstration fields. Various companies will present special applications of ‘smart farming’ on 2 hectares of the total trial field. Novelties such as working with variable planting distances, variable fertilisation and sensoring will be shown here. These are developments that are the specialties of many Dutch companies. To throw more light on the latest and most striking innovations in the potato sector, a ‘Next Level Innovation Award’ has been created. The award will be presented by the Dutch Minister of Agriculture, Ms Sharon Dijksma. ‘There is special attention for international visitors’, organisers Anne Mast en Paulien Hoftijzer tell us. 12 Potato World 2013 • number 2 Pagina 11
